高本はおびただしい数の洗濯バサミを用いたインスタレーションの作者として知られる。時に数万個に及ぶ洗濯バサミを連結させ、砂紋によって模様が描かれた石庭にバベルの塔が屹立するような風景を生み出してきた。一方で2016年から「組み立て式の社会」と題した平面作品も並行して制作しており、本作はこちらに該当する。
このシリーズでは、日常を捉えたスナップ写真の中の記号部分が、絵具で反復され描かれていく。例えば、警備員が交通整理をする写真では、警備員の着るベストのVの字のような反射盤が反復され、画面の大部分が埋められる、といった具合である。ベストの反射盤、横断歩道、煙突、カラーコーンなど、街にひそむこれらの記号はいずれも私たちの行動を規定する、と作者は言う。高本はおびただしい量のモノや情報が複雑に絡まり形成される現代社会、そしてその中で行動を巧みに操作されてしまう私たちの暮らしのあり様を、作品を通してあぶり出すのである。

Recommendation for the exhibition

Takamoto is known for his installations employing a vast number of clothes pins.
By connecting sometimes tens of thousands of clothes pins, he has produced views in which the Tower of Babel rises out of a rock garden patterned with ripple marks.
Meanwhile, from 2016, he has also been producing two-dimensional works entitled Assembled Society, a series to which the present work belongs.
In this series, a sign in a snapshot of a daily scene is repeated in paint to create a painting.
For example, in the photograph of a security guard directing the traffic, the V-shaped reflective plate on the vest he is wearing is repeated and a considerable part of the picture is covered in that pattern.
According to Takamoto, signs lurking in town such as the reflective plate on a vest, a pedestrian crossing, chimneys, or color marker cones all prescribe our behavior.
Through these works, Takamoto brings the contemporary society formed by an intricate entanglement of a vast quantity of commodities and information and the situation in which, living in that society, our activities are cleverly managed to light.
